The fine spell of weather on Sunday was truly welcomed as our finalists teed up for 36 holes of Championship Matchplay on the weekend.
The prestigious Seniors division saw Manawatu Wanganuis current number #1 Ryan Rooney take on MGCs course Superintendent Shay Melis for our first matchup. In a very competitive match between the pair, Ryan asserted dominance but Pennants Captain Shay showed his pedigree around his own course and stayed very much in the game until late in the afternoon where the gentlemen shook hands after 31 holes, Ryan winning 6&5 to etch his name for his fourth time on the honours board. Well Done Ryan, Senior Club Champion 2023.
The Intermediate division had Luke Kleinschmidt teeing it up against Graham Marshall, two players who are often representing the club in Presidents and Handicap Pennants Teams going head to head. Graham had found form in recent weeks and applied this however it was a tight affair through 18 holes, it being the afternoon round where Graham got ahead of Luke with a 7&6 victory. Well Done G, Intermediate Club Champion 2023.
The Junior A title was contested between Richard Ellery and Stu Amor, with Stu laying on a rampage after an initially slow start. Richard attempted to flurry off the assault with a few hole wins but it was the third nine where the pressure was really felt and unfortunately Richard came unstuck being 9 Down with 8 remaining. Well Done Stu, Junior A Club Champion 2023.
This year the Junior B was over before it began as finalist Todd Sutton underwent a pending surgery a week out from finals day. The title going to his competitor Rob Peters for 2023.
In the Ladies Divisions a competitive encounter ensued for the Ladies Silver between Bronwyn Bielby and Rachel Williams, with Bron taking glory 5&4 for 2023 after last year's Final heartache. Congratulations Bron, Silver Club Champion 2023.
The Bronze II was decided between Allie Bary and Christine Skou, these ladies having played many years of golf together enjoyed the day with Allie coming out victorious with a 6&5 win. Congratulations Allie, Bronze II Club Champion 2023.
Congratulations to all winners and runners up and thank you to all caddies, spectators and supporters for turning out.
