Marton Golf Club were proud to host the Manawatu Wanganui Champions of Champions event on Sunday albeit even in wet conditions. The weekend downpour gave even more a challenge to competitors with the infamous lake areas re-appearing in some low spots on the course ????
Despite the morning rain, players from 14 District Clubs turned out to prove they are the best of the best on one of the toughest courses in the district.
WOMENS SILVER
Jenny Ritchie was chasing the young talent of Dual Champion Casey Chettleburgh from the beginning, trailing Caseys first round 75 by 14 shots. Jenny put in two solid rounds over the day which nestled her third place behind Feildings Jess Williams.
WOMENS BRONZE
Consistancey is key in these events and Cheryl Rhodes kept to that principle. With a morning round of 94, etching her nearest competitor by 2 shots, she stuck to the same game plan for another 94 in the afternoon which saw her notch 4 more shots to her lead and to win the title of 2022 Bronze Champion.
WOMENS BRONZE II
Fine margins in this competition with our Marton gal Ros Morrison almost clinching victory but perhaps it was the conversion rate of Feildings Kathy Henderson on the par 3s that won her the title by 3 shots as she made par on 3 of 4 par 3s.
MENS SENIOR
Our Men's Senior Club Champion Ryan Rooney, having just returned from the NZ Amateur Championships in Otago, set the pace early amidst the steady morning rain with an opening 72 on home turf which had him leading by 4 shots over Hawkestones Hamish McDonald. Errors at the beginning of Ryan's afternoon round proved costly as PNs Junior Tatana came home in a whopping 67 (close to course record) and leapt into first place with Ryan holding on to a respectable third place finish.
MENS INTERMEDIATE
Our Zones Winner Ryan Bremner represented the Intermediate Division with the wet conditions proving tough for all. However it was perhaps the back to back birdies which put Feildings Tony Boxall square with the card after just 5 holes and ultimately 5 shots ahead at the break. Ryan chased this tally in his afternoon round, with a comeback looking likely being only 3 over through an 8 hole period, however a margin of doubles and a triple undid this. Ryan ended tied second alongside Rangitikei's Sean Khov, both behind Tony Boxall, however our youngster took out the Intermediate Nett.
MENS JUNIOR
Marton Golf Clubs resident Frenchman and Junior Club Champion Maxime Ramiroz opened up his first 36 hole campaign and on the big stage. A combination of nerves and weather conditions unsettled Max early on but he soon found his form for the day with a couple of pars but it was his afternoon round proving his best with more good holes and a back to back clutch par finish. Playing partner David Worsfold from Apiti had a slow start to his day but finished with a strong 4 over par final nine which saw him scale into first place.
